Rekeying changes which key opens your lock without replacing the hardware. It is usually the cheaper and smarter option.
Rekey or replace?
Rekeying alters the internal pins so your old keys no longer work and new ones do. The lock body stays on the door. It costs less than new hardware and takes less time, and the result is exactly as secure as it was before.
Replacement makes sense when the lock is worn, damaged, or you want to upgrade the security standard. Otherwise rekeying does the job.
When to rekey
Moving house is the big one. You have no way of knowing how many copies of the previous owner's keys exist, or who holds them.
