Try this before calling
If the key won't turn, the steering lock may be engaged. Grip the steering wheel and rock it gently left and right while turning the key. This releases the lock and resolves the problem surprisingly often, at no cost to you.
On an automatic, also check the car is fully in Park. Many vehicles won't release the key otherwise.
When it is the barrel
Worn barrels are usually caused by worn keys. If we replace a barrel we cut fresh keys to match, so the new one isn't damaged the same way.

- The barrel turns freely without starting the engine

Often, depending on the wear. We'll assess and tell you which makes sense rather than defaulting to the more expensive option.
Will I need new keys too?
If the barrel is replaced, usually yes, and we cut them at the same visit.
My key turns but the car won't start.
That may be the immobiliser rather than the barrel — possibly a failed transponder in the key. We can test both on site.
